Nigeria have sacked coach Shaibu Amodu despite the team's third-place finish at this year's Africa Cup of Nations.

It is the second time the 51-year-old has been removed from his post ahead of a World Cup finals tournament.

The decision was taken after a late-night meeting of the Nigerian Football Federation in Abuja.

Dutchman Guus Hiddink, currently Russia's coach, is among those on a shortlist of preferred candidates to replace Amodu.

Earlier this week, Egypt coach Hassan Shehata claimed he had been approached by Nigeria to lead them at the World Cup later this year, while Zambia boss Herve Renard says he has been approached by several other African teams.

Amodu was in his fourth stint as national coach, having also managed Nigeria from 1994-95, 1998-99 and 2001-02.

He was also fired ahead of the 2002 World Cup finals after Nigeria again finished third at the African Nations Cup.

He returned to the role in 2008 having ended a spell as manager of Nigerian Premier League side Sharks FC three years earlier.

The Super Eagles boss was under intense pressure going into the African Cup of Nations in Angola, with calls from several quarters for him to be fired.

Despite guiding Nigeria to the semi-finals the team's style of play, his tactics and key decision-making were all questioned during the tournament.

The Super Eagles lost 1-0 to Ghana in the final four but beat Algeria by the same scoreline to secure third place.

The NFF must now move swiftly to recruit a new coach with the World Cup finals in South Africa just over four months away.

Nigeria are in Group B along with Argentina, Greece and South Korea, with their opening match against the Argentines on 12 June in Johannesburg.

NFF media officer Ademola Olajire said: "The technical committee of the federation has been mandated to have a new man in place by the end of the month."

Other names in the frame are thought to include former England caretaker manager Peter Taylor, Bruno Metsu, who coached Senegal to the 2002 World Cup quarter-finals, and Ratomir Dujkovic, Ghana's coach at the last World Cup in Germany.

Amodu, meanwhile, has been given the task of overseeing Nigeria's home-based players for the new African Nations Champions tournament, a competition for players who play their club football in Africa.

Olajire added: "He will be in charge of talent identification and finding players for the future."

ThanK ya all, I think right thinking people should be allowed to comment on this page not dirty headed souls. Theses guys have made name and money thus they have "big boys". a typical black man is a (well fed home-lost)few pipu like Kano and Okocha will always do what their mother want from them. I began to wander if you as a person is made the national couch of Angola for instance, and you have 4months to the world come, what set of guyS would you use, will you have the time to gather new legs? no, I am sure you will start from the so called Yuropian stars/based. In that same vein no new caoch can perform magic, what Westernoff did is what should be done. Go to the bushes and cut fresh trees then select from your product. I bet you you will have the world best. Okocha is started lets do the same .

I salute coach Amodu for his contributions 2 nigeria football. Our great problem is d so called NFF. Wat do u xpect when those who knew nothing about a game are appointd as administrators and managers of it. I love Bonfere Jos, why was he not shortlistd?

When will we ever have a proactive, and forward planning governing body for our football? This is what the NFF would have done long ago in the first instance. Again we wait for unecessary pressure and last minute before taking decisions on matters crucial to the emotion of the nation. The question now is how shall we guarantee the transparency of the process and ensure that the right man is hired for the job under the right terms.

It doesnt take even a non-football fan or player to know that we have got these problems: The need for a foreign coach is as paramount as the need for a new set of players mixed with a few experienced and international playing nigerian players. We may not need to sign a and foreign coach if our players are ready and committed to their duties e.g obafemi Martins first outings for Nigeria was amazing but looking at Martins play now he doesnt seem the same young man we used to know. We need new and young, local boys to grace the shirts of super eagles coupled with a coach who would not compromise (NFF Bossy Attitude) anything for his work and will not be corrupt. Please, let us also not forget that Nigeria has got a football house full of corrupt official that would not listen to the yearns of the nation but wants to field there own boys at all cost and therby imposing there boys on the coaches such as Amodu. Please Nigerians pray for an entire turn around, not only the coacj or the players but an entire trun around.

Sacking Amodu is not the solution, what else does Nigerian want 4rm Amodu, He qualified Nigeria 4 the world cop and was given a target 4 semifinal at the just concluded nations Cup which he met, right now Nigeria is 15th in the world.... We will wait and see what the foreign Coach will do..... God bless Nigeria
