Liberty Professionals goalie, Daniel Adjei, has vowed to topple Adam Kwarasey as Ghana’s number one goalie in a move that is set to introduce stronger competition between the two in the Black Stars ahead of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

The 22-year-old who is aiming at snatching the position from the Stromsgodset shot stopper and told Graphic Sports that he would prove his worth when he rejoins the national team.

“Everybody knows what I am capable of doing from the Under 20 World Cup and I hope to become the number one goalkeeper for the Black Stars”, he said in an interview after Liberty beat Aduana Stars 2-0 at Dansoman last Sunday.

For a while now, the Liberty’s safest pair of hands had been sidelined by Coach Kwasi Appiah due to inaction on the local scene but Adjei said he was not disappointed by his relegation from the national team and promised to return soon.

He said his absence from the Stars had been explained to him by the head coach who informed him (Adjei) that his invitation had been temporarily frozen until such time that the local league resumed for a proper assessment.

The U-20 World Cup-winning keeper said Ghana’s time had come to win the continental trophy, stating that he and his colleagues would be going to South Africa with next year having in mind the high expectations of Ghanaians to win the trophy for the fifth time.

“We are aware Ghanaians are expecting us to bring the Cup home next year but with God on our side and hard work we would ensure we win and bring the trophy to Ghana” he said.

Until the arrival of Kwarasey on the scene, Adjei had assumed the second choice Black Stars goalie after the experience Richard Kingson.

He was the No.2 man under former national coach, Milovan Rajevac at he 2010 World Cup in South Africa. However, he dropped down the pecking order when Goran Stevanovic took over the national team and eventually lost his playce to Ernest Sowah of Berekum Chelsea due to inactivity on the local scene.
